Topaz Centre

History

The Topaz Centre opened in July 2007 to provide multi-agency support to survivors of rape and sexual assault in Nottinghamshire.

The Topaz Centre offers:

An appropriate environment for a forensic examination for evidence, statement taking and support work
A Support Worker or Crisis Worker who is trained to support the survivor during the initial stages of reporting including the examination
Access to the service via the helpline
Telephone support, or up to 8 sessions of face-to-face support is available for all clients
Medical examination which can take place up to 7 days after the attack. This is available with or without reporting to the Police.This time allows the person to talk through their available choices without the fear of losing the option to give forensic evidence.
Access to the client's local GUM Clinic for emergency medical care and follow up
Access to ongoing counselling

The Topaz Centre is a dedicated centre that is fully furnished and decorated in a comfortable and relaxing style. It is located at a convenient site that is easily accessible by public transport and by car from all areas of the county but is independently located and therefore discreet.

The Topaz Centre endeavours to provide an efficient, caring, informative and clinically effective service based on the client's choices and needs.

We offer equality in the provision of the service for the victim with respect for their dignity, personal needs, lifestyle, background, religious, ethnicity, culture, sexuality and sexual health needs.

We also offer equality in the accessibility to the service for all persons and therefore having disabled access, disabled toilets facilities and offer provision for an interpreter to cater for additional needs.

It is well recognised that the number of cases of rape or sexual assault that are reported to the police are not representative of the number of attacks that occur. In order to obtain a clearer picture of these violent crimes, The Topaz Centre maintains a database of anonymous information which will inform future campaigns and police investigations.

The Topaz Centre continuously reviews and assesses the service provision which enables us to be the most appropriate multi-agency services for people that have experienced rape or sexual assault.
